At Kolkrabenweg in Cologne, the Bertha-von-Suttner-Realschule was replaced by an innovative new building that provides optimal conditions for modern learning. In multiple construction phases, a new school complex was developed, featuring 37 classrooms and specialist rooms, a warming kitchen, and a sports hall with a rooftop photovoltaic system. Despite the school remaining operational, construction was executed with precision. The new building adheres to Cologne’s strict energy guidelines, merging functionality with maximum energy efficiency.

Natural Daylight for an Inspiring Learning Environment

At the heart of the concept is the optimal use of natural daylight. The installed LAMILUX PR60 Glass Roofs create bright, inviting spaces that have been proven to enhance student concentration and well-being. Especially in interior rooms, natural daylight creates a pleasant learning atmosphere, supports natural biorhythms, and improves student performance. At the same time, the construction provides optimized sound insulation, ensuring that classrooms remain quiet and minimizing noise disturbance, even during busy breaks.

Energy-Efficient Construction and Safety

The PR60 Glass Roofs combine excellent thermal insulation with modern design. Their advanced frame construction minimizes heat loss, making a significant contribution to energy efficiency. In addition to their aesthetic and functional qualities, the glass roofs feature integrated ventilation flaps, which provide daily ventilation and serve as smoke and heat extraction systems (SHEV) in case of fire. With various sizes, including mono-pitched roofs up to 4.65 x 13.41 meters, the glass structures perfectly adapt to the school’s architecture, making the new building a model for sustainable educational construction.
