Modern Daylight Design for a School with Tradition

The new extension of the Markgraf-Georg-Friedrich-Gymnasium bridges historical 19th- and 20th-century architecture with contemporary design. The aim was not only to create a functional connection between the buildings but also to enhance learning spaces with natural daylight. Given the hillside location and high energy-efficiency requirements, the project presented significant architectural and planning challenges. Eleven high-performance LAMILUX Glass Skylights FE 3° met these demands, combining aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.

Daylight as an Architectural Highlight

The LAMILUX glass elements serve as both functional daylight solutions and key design features. Installed in the spacious break hall, library, and meeting rooms, they maximize natural light and create an inviting atmosphere. A particularly striking feature is the four suspended glass elements above the open break hall, forming a continuous light strip that symbolises the harmonious transition from tradition to modernity. "These elements seamlessly integrate into the surrounding architecture and enhance the overall aesthetic with their elegance and precision," explains architect Andreas Weingut.

Innovative Solutions for Ventilation and Safety

Of the eleven installed glass skylights, two are fixed, while the remaining nine are operable, fulfilling dual purposes. They provide daily ventilation while also serving as smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (SHEV) units in the event of a fire. This combination of safety and comfort reflects the thoughtful planning that meets the high standards of an environmentally certified school. Additionally, the three-degree inclined mounting frames ensure a seamless water drainage system, reducing maintenance efforts and preventing dirt accumulation.

Design and Function in Perfect Harmony

The choice of LAMILUX glass elements was not only technically but also aesthetically driven. Compared to traditional acrylic domes, these glass skylights offer a sleek and visually appealing alternative that blends harmoniously into the architectural ensemble. For a touch of added elegance, the chain actuators are discreetly embedded within the mounting frame, with concealed cable routing ensuring that technical components remain invisible. This clean architectural design enhances the modern learning environment, seamlessly combining tradition with the future.
